NESC builds STEAM pathways that help youth and families connect technology, climate justice, and future opportunity.
Our Work
NESC uses hands-on STEAM learning to build more than technical skills. We create emotionally safe spaces where young people can explore, make mistakes, manage frustration, and keep going.
Our makerspace is not an arts-and-crafts room. It is a learning environment where youth practice persistence, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and systems thinking. Through making, students learn to test ideas, revise their approach, and understand how parts connect to a larger whole.
We use a tinker–maker–engineer approach. Youth begin with curiosity and play, move into hands-on building and design, and grow toward iteration, repair, and real-world problem-solving.
This is how STEAM becomes more than enrichment. It becomes a pathway for confidence, resilience, climate awareness, career readiness, and community problem-solving.
The Pathway Starts Here
STEAM opportunity should not depend on luck or one-time programs. It should not depend on a family’s ability to navigate disconnected systems.
Young people need steady, hands-on experiences that build confidence over time and connect what they make, code, design, repair, and imagine to the world they are inheriting.
For NESC, STEAM is more than enrichment. It is how youth begin to understand technology, climate, creativity, career pathways, and community power as connected parts of their future.

What We Do
In collaboration with community-based organizations, the Northeast STEAM Coalition takes pride in curating a comprehensive community calendar filled with engaging STEAM-focused events, summer camps, afterschool programs, and entrepreneurial workshops. Our primary goal is to enhance accessibility to STEAM education within the Portland, OR community. We invite you to explore the diverse range of offerings we have prepared for you below.
Our Community Partners
Building a Pathway That Holds
NESC is built through partnership. Our network brings together schools, community organizations, public agencies, funders, educators, and workforce partners to make STEAM opportunity more connected, consistent, and useful for young people and families.
Together, we do more than host programs. We align resources, share knowledge, open doors, and create hands-on learning experiences that connect creativity, technology, climate awareness, and future career pathways. This is how scattered opportunities become a pathway young people can actually follow.
